What is a Chronic Illness or a Chronic Disease?

Chronic diseases are illnesses that continue for a long period of time or recurr over a long period of time. According to the World Health Organisation chronic diseases are the leading cause of mortality in the world. Heart disease, stroke, cancer, chronic respiratory diseases and diabetes represent 60% of all deaths.

Early diagnosis and compliance management  are very important to manage a chronic condition and make sure that you continue to have a good quality of life.

While people of all ages are affected by chronic illnesses, there is a higher risk of the elderly developing chronic diseases. Most people over the age of 40, suffer from 1 of the top 5 chronic diseases. An interesting fact from the World Health Organisation is that out of the 35 million people who died from chronic disease in 2005, half were under 70 and half were women!
