Your Health  High Cholestrol

What is a High Cholesterol or Hyperlipideamia?

A certain amount of cholesterol is essential in a healthy diet, but too much in the blood can lead to health problems. You don’t need to cut all fats out of your diet, just replace the bad fats with good ones.

Cholesterol is carried around the body by lipoproteins. There are two main types of lipoproteins:

  1. High Cholestrol can often be treated with a healthy dietHDL (High density lipoproteins): HDL carries cholesterol to the liver to process it for excretion. LDL helps decrease cholesterol in the system. HDL cholesterol is good!
  2. LDL (Low density lipoproteins): LDL carries cholesterol from the liver to the rest of the body. When there is too much cholesterol in the blood it gets deposited on the artery walls. LDL cholesterol is bad!

What Fats Should You Worry About?

There are the main types of fats:

  • Monounsaturated Fats:
Lower your total cholesterol and raise HDL. They are found in nuts, canola oil, olive oil.
  • Polyunsaturated Fats:
Lower your total cholesterol and lower LDL. They are found in salmon, fish oil, corn, safflower.
  • Saturated Fats:
Raise total cholesterol. In particular they raise the bad cholestrol - LDL. They are found in animal products, meat, dairy, eggs, coconut & palm kernel oil.
  • Trans-Fats/Trans-Fatty Acids:
Raise LDL and lower HDL. So these fats are really bad for you! They are found in fast food and commercially prepared and processed food.

Yes! High cholesterol is one of the risk factors associated with a greater likelihood of developing coronary artery disease (CAD). Raised total cholesterol, smoking and raised blood pressure are all linked to the increasing incidence of CAD, as well as other inherited, behavioural or emotional/stress factors.

What Treatment is Available for High Cholestrol?

Up to a certain level, high cholesterol can be controlled by diet. It is advisable to visit a dietician in order to understand what foods are high in cholesterol and should be avoided. Above this level your doctor is likely to prescribe medication to bring your cholesterol levels under control.
